Want a Boho Home? Here's What To Do.

So you’re ready to switch up the look and feel of your home? And you’ve chosen a boho style. Maybe you’ve been scrolling on Pinterest, or you've been inspired by other designs and you want to commit to creating a true boho home. Not sure where to start? Let us help!

So what exactly is a ‘boho’ design? Boho is shorthand for the French word bohemian, which refers to Bohemia, a part of what we now call the Czech Republic. Bohemia was believed to be the home of the Romani people, which is where this style originates. Originating in India, the Romani people led colorful, free and artistic lifestyles and were known for their creative flair, bold design, and abundance of highly skilled musicians, and artists. In 16th century France, a bohemian style of life evolved to include any artist, musician, or writer who lead a life that was unconventional. Which mainly included travel! Boho style has also been linked to the hippy culture of the 1960s and ’70s.

So as you can see this style is rich in history and diversity and holds a ton of potential!

What does boho mean to designers today?

Nowadays this style refers to an aesthetic that takes inspiration from free-spirited ways of life. Often we connect this style to vacations, beaches, or cute long getaway weekends. There is a fusion between the old and the new, mixing antique pieces with fresh light natural elements and textures. There is an element of relaxation at the center of boho designs, it's important to create spaces in your home to rest in the midst of your exploration and creativity.

Choose natural finishes

Incorporating elements and the textures of nature in your design is a great way to add a boho feel. With the influence of the 1960s and '70s, this design theme brings in a rich infusion of accessories and furnishings that utilize natural or raw materials such as hemp, wood, and rattan. Think macrame wall hangings, rich wooden furniture, and rattan table accessories.

Keep it casual

If you’re unsure about where to start, remember that often the more simple a design is, the better! This goes for boho styles too. Boho styles are not over the top or fussy, the focus is on creating calm and clean places for people to rest, create, and relax together. When it comes to color palettes, keep them fresh and simple. Choose 2 or 3 colors to have as a focal point and keep your walls neutral.

Reuse, upcycle and opt for vintage or thrift store accessories

Boho styles are less about buying brand new, and more about creating something new. While thrifting may require time and energy, you would be surprised at how many potential boho pieces you can get on a budget, especially when it comes to textured pieces like wicker! Which is a popular material used in this style.

Like any eclectic home space, boho-style rooms make creative use of interesting and unique pieces. Boho celebrates the past and therefore is the perfect design to bring in more antique items. Maybe you have some items already that are demanding to be shown off? Creating an accent wall, or gallery is a great idea to display your prized antiques.

Bring the outdoors in

If you love greenery and creating indoor jungles then this is definitely the style for you. Truthfully, when creating a bohemian style, you can never have too many plants. They serve as the perfect decor choice and add some life to any room in your home. Use wooden platers, hand-crafted macrame wall hangings, and play with nature-inspired accessories.

Have fun with your interior design

Boho-style is not serious, it’s an opportunity to play and let your creativity shine. What’s so great about it is that you can’t really get it wrong. There are no rules! Whether you want to go for a more artistic and bright boho theme, or maybe more whimsical, or nature-inspired, the options are limitless!
